Peace Farm was founded in 2012 by artists Brent Scheneman and Eliza Monet. The project explores ways to help foster a culture of world peace working from a traditional Greek farm setting. Its aims are to examine and to model ideas that create conditions conducive for the life of all existing natural systems as well as for the gardens, livestock and participants.
Currently Peace Farm’s man-made features include a donkey breeding program, the daily care of organic gardens, pastures, fruit and nut trees, six sheep, five donkeys (and counting), three horses, two pigs, two goats, three farm dogs, five geese and many rabbits. Peace Farm’s ‘Philosopher’s Walk with Donkeys’ is a new public outreach program.
Adults and children alike will become one with nature on a unique walk across the incredible Cretan countryside with a herd of gentle Peace Farm donkeys as your hosts. With traditional Apokoronas village of Armeni as a starting point you will saunter on country lanes and ancient donkey paths (known as “kalderimi”), through valleys, foothills, fragrant olive and orange groves, past historical sites, along clear mountain streams, and under giant platanos trees. With the majestic White Mountains as a backdrop throughout the walk, incredible Cretan donkeys accompanying you, and all proceeds going to support The Peace Farm project, this is the perfect opportunity for families and friends of all ages to experience some memorable time in rural Crete whilst helping to keep a very worthwhile project going.
For added fun, there are special activities for the children included in the morning walk program. A picnic with organic treats and refreshments is included in the ticket price. Private walks to suit your party’s needs, budget, and timetable can also be arranged.
