This restful location is walking distance from the amenities in the traditional village centre and a short drive from the pristine sandy beaches, small harbour, and the many shops and tavernas in the village of Kalives. With a larger than average pool, a fabulous jacuzzi, and beautiful views that stretch across the surrounding countryside of green and silver olive groves to the azure Aegean sea in the near distance, Villa Luka is ideal for guests who like to feel wonderfully away from it all whilst being within a stone's throw of a myriad of family-friendly activities and good facilities.
Villa Luka has been cleverly designed in order to bring your living area into the outdoors so that you can fully appreciate the fresh air and view at all times. Both inside and out there is an abundance of space in which to unwind and the individual members of your family can even spread out and enjoy some private "me" time if desired. With a number of choices for either sun or shade and an ample supply of garden furniture including tables, chairs, sun umbrellas, sun-beds, and swing chairs. The covered main terrace wraps around two sides of the villa, gives easy access to the pool terrace below, and resembles an open-air lounge and dining room. Situated next to both the modern kitchen and the stone and brick built barbeque, it is perfect for staging leisurely family meals made from mouth-watering local produce enhanced by the array of fresh herbs including oregano, basil, sage, rosemary, mint, bay leaves, and chillies that can be picked from the villas herb garden.Villa Luka's three bedrooms are located on the ground floor which helps to keep them cooler during the long, hot summer season. The 2 double bedrooms both have wide sliding doors which open out onto a shared covered terrace that overlooks the pool and garden. Every modern comfort has been provided at the villa including free WIFI internet access, independent air conditioning throughout (in addition to the ceiling fans in the bedrooms), insect screens, aluminium doors, windows and shutters, water heated by solar panel and immersion heater, a wood burning stove, central heating, a Plasma TV, a DVD player, a CD player, a satellite TV box, an I-pod/I-phone docking station, and a selection of family board games.
Surrounded by a low stone wall, the 806m2 garden has been lovingly landscaped and planted with a large variety of flowers, shrubs, and well established trees to give natural shade and a rainbow of colour. Bougainvillea, fragrant honeysuckle and jasmine, geraniums, hydrangea, birds of paradise, date palms, yukka, oleander, pine, cypress, rubber, olive, orange, tangerine, lemon, lime, pear and plum trees are just some of the flora that help to make this a delightful Mediterranean haven. Taking centre stage are the attractive 50m2 pool that has a separate shallow children's area, and the wooden deck with the enticing jacuzzi. Perfect at any time of year, the jacuzzi has seats, massage jets and a choice of hot or cold water which is a huge bonus in the Spring and Autumn when standard pools can be rather chilly. Swimming in the cooling pool waters during the long hot summer days is positively therapeutic, and at night, whatever the season, romantic couples can sit in the warm jacuzzi bubbles whilst sipping a crisp glass of wine from the nearby Dourakis Winery. (Since the accompanying photos were taken, for privacy purposes, bamboo screening has been added to the back of the pergola structure that stands over the jacuzzi).
Villa Luka has been built on one level allowing the 130m2 accommodation to flow effortlessly from room to room. An abundance of French doors allow plenty of sunlight into the villa, archways connect the 3 sections of the L-shaped open-plan living area, and a corridor at the opposite end of the villa leads to the bedrooms. The English owner has created an appealing and welcoming home by combining comfortable furnishings with many thoughtful touches. All modern comforts have been provided for, including free WIFI, a docking station, a fully equipped kitchen, beautiful tiled bathrooms, a washing machine, a DVD player, satellite and internet TV channels, a selection of C.D.s and family games, and air conditioning throughout. For the the cooler nights early and late season,the A/C units can also be used as heaters and there is an open fireplace. All of the rooms have white aluminium doors. and/or tilt-turn windows, shutters, and insect screens, and there is solar powered hot water and a back-up immersion heater.
Whilst it will undoubtedly be difficult to tear yourself away from such a relaxing property, various local tavernas serving delicious authentic food can be found tucked away in the neighbouring villages, and Neo Horio itself is an excellent starting point for exploring the many sites that West Crete has to offer because it is only a few minutes drive to the foothills of the mountains, and to the National Highway.
Ground floor (1 step up from the parking area, 7 steps to the pool terrace, 6.5 steps to the side garden): Spacious open-plan L-shaped kitchen, dining room and lounge, 1 master double bedroom with en-suite shower room, 1 twin bedroom, 1 double bedroom, 1 main bathroom, a large wrap around covered terrace, and 2 small covered balconies.
The large modern, fully equipped kitchen/dining area has chocolate coloured wood cupboards, black marble effect counter tops, Inox appliances including a washing machine, dishwasher, a ceramic hob, cooker hood, a built in double oven, a fridge/freezer, and a microwave oven, a frappe maker, a kettle, a toaster, and a full kitchen inventory. There is a door to the main wrap around terrace, and 2 windows which looks out to the front and side gardens, a hill with the ruins of a small Turkish castle, and the mountains peeking over the top of a village house. An archway leads to the dining area which has a pine dining table and 4 chairs with beige cushions, a bookcase crammed with books, a drinks trolley, a chandelier, curtains, a window to the east that overlooks the barbeque area to a small road and an old disused basket ball court, and double doors to the main terrace. The main wraparound terrace is furnished with a mosaic topped dining table and chairs with green cushions, 2 three person couches, an armchair, and a matching coffee table. An archway leads from the dining area into the lounge which has triple doors that open out onto the main terrace, and a single door that opens out onto the covered entrance terrace and the private, gated parking area. The entrance terrace has terracotta pots filled with geraniums, and an egg-shaped swing chair. The lounge has a brick fireplace, 2 two person brown leather sofas, 1 matching brown leather three person sofa/bed, a glass and dark wood coffee table, a Free WIFI router, a black glass TV table with a 42 inch TV, a DVD player, a satellite receiver, and an internet dongle with foreign TV channels via FilmOn, a dark wood book case/cabinet with leaded light glass doors, a dark wood low cabinet with an LG stereo unit, a docking station, a chess set, Scrabble, and CD's, a nest of 3 side tables, curtains, and a glass chandelier. Triple French doors lead out to the main terrace, and there is a window that looks out to the front garden and private, gated parking area. An archway leads from the living room to a hallway which has doors to the 3 bedrooms and the full bathroom. The master double bedroom suite has a double bed with a pine headboard, 2 cream bedside cabinets with silver lamps with purple silk lampshades, a cream chest of drawers/dressing table with a mirror, a cream fabric chair, floor to ceiling built-in wardrobes with shelves and hanging space, purple silk curtains, a chandelier, a window that looks out to the pool and surrounding country side, and double doors out to a small private balcony that overlooks the jacuzzi and pool, and the south side garden area which has plants, a rotary clothes dryer, and a natural stone wall between Villa Luka and the next door house. Neo Horio is a typical Greek village built on a hillside overlooking a verdant plain that has long been fed by the Mantamas and Kouliakoude Rivers, and where most of the village occupants rely on farming the surrounding olive and orange groves to make a living. Originating from Minoan times but rebuilt a number of times after being destroyed by invaders, hence the name - meaning New Village in Greek. The ruins of Koule Fortress (built during the Ottoman invasion over the remains of Venetian buildings) stand on a hill high above the village centre and can be seen from Villa Luka. In addition to the many wells and cisterns that can still be seen today, visitors might also like to visit the olive press and storage rooms of a Venetian residence, and the quaint Agios Gerasimos church that is built on a rock edge on the village outskirts. The focal point of daily life now revolves around the small shops and cafes near an ancient well and the centuries old plane (Platanus) tree that sits on the middle of the T-junction in the centre of the village (700m from Villa Luka). Here the men come to chat, drink coffee (or something stronger) and play tavli (a form of backgammon). In the summer they sit outside under the shade of the plane tree, and in the winter they huddle around the wood burning stoves in the kafenions. The village amenities include a simple taverna, souvlaki/gyros cafes, a mini market which has fresh fruit and vegetables, a bakery, a pharmacy, an old-fashioned barber, and a petrol station. Just 1.8kms from Villa Luka is the village of Armeni. There are 4 excellent tavernas, a good butcher shop, a well stocked mini market, and a number of cafés and souvlaki shops. One of the tavernas hosts regular “Cretan Nights” throughout the season, with live music and fun Cretan dancers, but be warned – you are expected to join in the festivities! For a complete change of pace, the Diadromes taverna is surrounded by an expansive lawn with the tables set on the river bank. At the weekends in the summer there is a babysitter on the premises and an array of children’s toys so that visiting parents can have a break and eat a quiet romantic meal if they wish. The nearby villages of Kalives or Almyrida have long been popular destinations for holiday makers seeking a typically Greek seaside resort that has many amenities, but is far removed from brash tourism. Both villages have child friendly sandy beaches, small fishing harbours, and a wide choice of excellent tavernas, cafes and shops. Also in Almyrida there is a games centre with pool tables and games machines, a children's play centre, a scuba diving office, pedalo rentals, a French run water sports centre which rents out kayaks, windsurfers and catamarans when their clients are not using them, and Villas Crete Holidays for tourist information, horse riding, private boat hire, boat trips, big game fishing, waterskiing, private sight-seeing flights in a light aircraft, and guided coach or walking tours. A few minutes by car from the villa, there are a huge variety of archaeological sites, and an interesting selection of small craft centres and museums, including glass blowing in Kokkino Horio and lace making in Gavalohori. For those of you looking for even more activity, the historic town of Chania is only 30 minutes away by car.
