Perched on a quiet hillside just one kilometer from the charming sea-view village of Kokkino Horio,  two kilometers from the excellent tavernas in Plaka,  and an additional one kilometer from the beach-ringed village of Almyrida, Villa Havana is a spectacular and tranquil three bedroom luxury retreat that combines functional sophistication with the familiar warmth of your own home.  Recently constructed, the distinctive open-plan split-level villa can sleep at least seven people (with its supplementary convertible couch) and boasts infinite ocean and mountain vistas, expansive indoor/outdoor living areas, a 10 meter long fresh water swimming pool (with child-friendly shallow-stepped Roman end), refined yet cozy furnishings, air conditioning units and ceiling fans, and every amenity one could possibly conjure. For the cooler nights at the start and end of the season the A/C units double up as heaters and there is a fireplace and full central heating (though heating oil is not included in the rental price).

Encased by sprawling gardens awash in kaleidoscopic color, the residential arboretum is chock full of native flora including bougainvillea, hibiscus, a variety of different palms, African daisies, bottle brush bushes, geraniums, olive trees, and young fruit trees. The huge outdoor patio and multi-tiered verandas are equipped with numerous seating and dining areas. Neutrally-cushioned rattan couches and chairs and a potpourri of variously sized wooden, mosaic, and sisal glass-topped tables are strategically placed for optimal comfort, convenience, and seclusion. Sun loungers, umbrellas, a built-in barbecue with adjacent stone-arched, red tiled-roofed gazebo, outdoor shower, stylish lighting fixtures, and a verdant astro-turf grassy zone further invites many hours of relaxed al fresco enjoyment.

Underscored by natural-hued Mediterranean tiled floors throughout, the spacious interior is elegantly designed in serene muted tones, the diaphanous cream, white, or fawn-colored curtains that veil the home’s many large windows and doors at once granting privacy while revealing the stunning Cretan scenery that enfolds the property. The house was thoughtfully conceived to ensure that guests in all three well-appointed bedrooms are greeted each morning by the inimitable mountain/sea panoramas that distinguish this property while the airy architectural scheme promotes both communal and private living as desired. Grand meals or quick bites can be prepared in the sizeable chef-friendly kitchen fully kitted with a ceramic hob, cooker hood, built-in oven, dishwasher, coffee maker, microwave, toaster, sandwich toaster, washing machine, ash wood cabinets, ample counter and storage space, and virtually every culinary tool one might require. A breakfast bar with two whimsical black Lucite/metal stools provides a perfect roost for the children or those conversing with the chef and divides the kitchen from the tasteful dining room where a picture window reveals olive groves back-dropped by the majestic Drapanos Hill. The chic massive lounge features sumptuous seating and a 42” wall-mounted flat screen satellite television alongside an unfettered open space where the children can play games. Extra wide French doors embroider all rooms on both levels which overlook lush gardens, the glistening pool, and imposing mountains. From virtually every vantage point the jeweled Souda Bay unfurls in an endless blue horizon, lulling the voyeur into a nearly hypnotic state of calm.

With a serenity-inducing setting worthy of a post card, no immediate neighbours to impede privacy, convenient location and enviable architectural assets, Villa Havana is an ideal accommodation option for the discerning visitor. Whether you’re a couple seeking a romantic respite, a family in need of sufficient space and distractions to entertain (or segregate!) the children, or a group of friends gathering to create an indelible holiday experience, you simply can’t go wrong by choosing Villa Havana. Add to that recipe the island’s splendid cuisine, charmingly affable locals, long sundrenched days, history, culture and unrivaled scenic delights… well, you ARE in the right place!

Villa Accommodation

Villa Raised Ground Floor: (8 steps from the villa’s main entrance; 8 steps from side kitchen entrance; 8 steps from wraparound covered veranda to pool, patio and gardens; 17 steps from large entry foyer to second floor). Open plan living room, kitchen and dining area, 1 twin bedroom; 1 detached full bathroom with bathtub/shower combo; 1 double convertible sleeper couch in entry vestibule. Covered wrap-around furnished verandas with sea/mountain/olive grove/pool and garden views.

The villa’s main entrance, in which a tan and azure convertible couch awaits with the potential to accommodate additional guests, leads to the large western-facing downstairs bedroom which features two wood/wrought iron twin beds, blonde-wood free-standing wardrobe, matching two-draw bed cabinets topped by individual reading lamps, and a full-length wall mirror. French doors open to a private balcony (replete with round high-topped mosaic coffee table and 2 chairs) that overlooks the pool and furnished patio area, beyond which the aqua Souda Bay looms. A full detached bathroom tiled in complementary foam grey/eggshell hues with a full bath with shower attachment, and a separate shower cabinet with plexi-glass doors, toilet, sink, mirrored vanity and underneath storage cabinet, and a frosted window, is easily situated just outside the bedroom door.

To the right of the sizable entry-way through paned French doors, the sprawling open-plan living/dining/kitchen area unfurls. The lounge is anchored by an imposing off-white stone and brick wood-burning corner fireplace which is fronted by a pair of sumptuous overstuffed brown/taupe two and three seat couches (with built-in side bookcases containing a considerable selection of reading material) and a contemporary dark wenge wood/smoky glass square coffee table. A sleek glass/chrome entertainment unit holding a mini boom box and DVD player is shadowed by a 42” wall-mounted flat screen satellite television. Extending from the furnished enclave, an unfettered open space affords a suitable indoor area for the kids to play. Lining the length of these adjoining rooms, two sets of over-sized French doors (secured by electric shutters) expose a wide pergola-covered wraparound deck featuring a dining area with a teak dining table with 8 dark brown wicker chairs, and a lounging area furnished with a dark brown wicker 2 seat couch with off-white cushions and 2 matching arm chairs and a glass topped coffee table, all of which are highlighted by the enthralling mountain/sea portrait.
Beside the living room, a chic dark wood rectangle table ringed by six off-white–upholstered chairs defines the lounge/kitchen-adjoining dining area. A bright east facing window peers upon the graveled car park offset by a backdrop of vibrant flowers, indigenous olive groves, and the stately Drapanos Hill. A breakfast bar with two stools separates the dining room from a large kitchen that is fully kitted with ample counter and storage space with ash wood cabinets. The kitchen further features Inox appliances including a four burner ceramic hob, a built-in oven, a cooker hood, dishwasher, and full-size fridge. Completing the room are other amenities such as filter coffee machine, microwave, toaster, sandwich toaster, electric juicer, blender, kettle, washing machine, iron/ironing board, vacuum cleaner, and virtually every culinary tool one might require. Eight steps from the car park and through the wraparound covered veranda the kitchen door neighbors a north facing-sliding glass window that reveals a bougainvillea-laced natural stone wall with views beyond the Souda Bay to the Akotiri Peninsula.

Villa First Floor: (17 steps from the ground floor). 2 bedrooms and 2 en-suite shower rooms – 1 master bedroom with queen bed and en-suite containing large shower/wet room with plexi-glass doors, 1 double bedroom with double bed and detached full shower room with large shower/wet room (sans plexi-glass doors). Wrap-around sea/mountain, pool and garden-view furnished balconies.

An L-shaped staircase to the left of the main foyer leads to an airy landing off which two additional en suite bedrooms branch. The substantial master is embroidered by two sets of outsized French doors swathed in sheer beige curtains that open to the second floor veranda ceilinged by wood-hewn lattices and holding a four-seat marble-topped dining table and chairs, black rattan/off-white upholstered love seat and matching arm chairs, round glass-topped rattan coffee table. The south/west and north facing doors variously access a private sea-facing terrace and a view-point balcony shared with the other upstairs bedroom. A sumptuous queen-sized sleigh bed centers the generous room which is further outfitted with a built-in wardrobe, chest and overhead horizontal wood-framed mirror, matching two-drawer bedside cabinets and reading lamps, full-length mirror, and small wood/cream-cushioned vanity stool. The attached en-suite is adorned with cerulean blue/foam grey tiles and offers a grand plexi-doored shower/wet room, sink, toilet, mirrored cabinet and vanity. The next door bedroom which, for additional privacy, does not share a connecting wall with the master bedroom, contains a wood-hewn double bed, a pair of knotty pine two-drawer bedside cabinets with reading lamps, a built-in natural wood wardrobe with hanging closest and three large drawers, and full-length mirror. French doors open to a broad private balcony that exposes the expansive gardens, pool/patio area and the home’s ubiquitous sea and mountain vistas. The private en-suite shower room echoes that of the master bedroom (without the plexi-glass shower doors). All of the French doors and windows are shielded by black-out shutters and all windows have mosquito screens.

Pool Terrace and Gardens: (8 steps from the covered veranda to pool and patio; 11 steps from the pool terrace to lower gardens).

The meticulously manicured gardens that carpet the plot include olive, fig, many varieties of palm, cacti and other succulents, and explosively colorful flowers and blooming plants such as hibiscus, African daisies, and bougainvillea. Scattered driftwood and rock sculptures further embellish the Zen-like arboretum. The 40+m2 swimming pool boasts an aesthetically pleasing and child-friendly shallow-stepped Roman end while an expansive patio area is furnished with an eight person dining table encircled by 8 brown rattan/ beige cushioned high back chairs, a two seat rattan couch with a couple of matching arm chairs, glass-topped rattan coffee table, and another round patio table shaded by large umbrella. Waterproof sun loungers, elegant lighting fixtures, and a stone-encased outdoor shower further surround the pool. Extending from the slip-resistant naturally-hued patio pavers, a green astro-turf area bleeds into the sea-view horizon while to the left of the pool, a stone-arched/red-tile peak-roofed gazebo sits beside a built-in barbecue.

Villa Location

The main taverna in Kokkino Horio and the well stocked mini market are only 1km from Villa Havana. The family-run taverna is shaded by weeping willow trees, has delicious food, and very friendly owners (Zacharias and his son Yiannis) who know everything about the village and the surrounding area. During the summer months there are occasional live Cretan music nights at the taverna, which are a lot of fun. Kokkino Horio (“red village” in Greek) was the main village set for the film “Zorba the Greek”. There are little whitewashed houses and narrow streets that wind around the village centre. At the village kafenion you can find older locals who were used as extras in the film, and who will happily show you photos of themselves with Anthony Quinn. Also in Kokkino Horio is the famous glass blowing workshop and organic taverna. Here you can watch recycled glass being blown in the traditional manner into amazingly beautiful products including lampshades, ornaments, decanters, plates and bowls. On the upper outskirts of the village there is a 3rd taverna with excellent views. The coastline below Villa Havana is famous for its sea caves, and it has Koutalas cove, which is a rocky inlet with a small stony/sandy beach. Plaka Square is just 2.2km away and has 6 tavernas, 3 mini markets, a an Italian restaurant, and 6 cafes. 7 minutes away by car is the lovely village of Almyrida which is built around a crescent shaped sandy beach. The beach is very shallow and safe, which is good news if you have children or are not a strong swimmer. Lining the beach are many excellent tavernas, cafes and shops. Also in Almyrida there is a scuba diving centre, a water sports centre which rents out kayaks, windsurfers and catamarans and Villa Crete Holidays for tourist information, private boat rental, boat trips, horse riding, private sightseeing flights, and organised walking and coach tours. For those of you looking for even more activity, the historic town of Chania is only 45 minutes away by car.
