The villa’s main entrance, in which a tan and azure convertible couch awaits with the potential to accommodate additional guests, leads to the large western-facing downstairs bedroom which features two wood/wrought iron twin beds, blonde-wood free-standing wardrobe, matching two-draw bed cabinets topped by individual reading lamps, and a full-length wall mirror. French doors open to a private balcony (replete with round high-topped mosaic coffee table and 2 chairs) that overlooks the pool and furnished patio area, beyond which the aqua Souda Bay looms. The meticulously manicured gardens that carpet the plot include olive, fig, many varieties of palm, cacti and other succulents, and explosively colorful flowers and blooming plants such as hibiscus, African daisies, and bougainvillea. Scattered driftwood and rock sculptures further embellish the Zen-like arboretum. The 40+m2 swimming pool boasts an aesthetically pleasing and child-friendly shallow-stepped Roman end while an expansive patio area is furnished with an eight person dining table encircled by 8 brown rattan/ beige cushioned high back chairs, a two seat rattan couch with a couple of matching arm chairs, glass-topped rattan coffee table, and another round patio table shaded by large umbrella. Waterproof sun loungers, elegant lighting fixtures, and a stone-encased outdoor shower further surround the pool. Extending from the slip-resistant naturally-hued patio pavers, a green astro-turf area bleeds into the sea-view horizon while to the left of the pool, a stone-arched/red-tile peak-roofed gazebo sits beside a built-in barbecue.
The main taverna in Kokkino Horio and the well stocked mini market are only 1km from Villa Havana. The family-run taverna is shaded by weeping willow trees, has delicious food, and very friendly owners (Zacharias and his son Yiannis) who know everything about the village and the surrounding area. During the summer months there are occasional live Cretan music nights at the taverna, which are a lot of fun. Kokkino Horio (“red village” in Greek) was the main village set for the film “Zorba the Greek”. There are little whitewashed houses and narrow streets that wind around the village centre. At the village kafenion you can find older locals who were used as extras in the film, and who will happily show you photos of themselves with Anthony Quinn. Also in Kokkino Horio is the famous glass blowing workshop and organic taverna. Here you can watch recycled glass being blown in the traditional manner into amazingly beautiful products including lampshades, ornaments, decanters, plates and bowls. On the upper outskirts of the village there is a 3rd taverna with excellent views. The coastline below Villa Havana is famous for its sea caves, and it has Koutalas cove, which is a rocky inlet with a small stony/sandy beach. Plaka Square is just 2.2km away and has 6 tavernas, 3 mini markets, a an Italian restaurant, and 6 cafes. 7 minutes away by car is the lovely village of Almyrida which is built around a crescent shaped sandy beach. The beach is very shallow and safe, which is good news if you have children or are not a strong swimmer. Lining the beach are many excellent tavernas, cafes and shops. Also in Almyrida there is a scuba diving centre, a water sports centre which rents out kayaks, windsurfers and catamarans and Villa Crete Holidays for tourist information, private boat rental, boat trips, horse riding, private sightseeing flights, and organised walking and coach tours. For those of you looking for even more activity, the historic town of Chania is only 45 minutes away by car.
