Enjoying a privileged position on an elevated hillside above the village of Plaka, Villa Elsa is blessed with sweeping 300 degree views over the seaside village of Almyrida to Souda Bay, the Akrotiri Peninsula, Aptera Castle, and The White Mountains. This light and airy villa remains the much loved second residence of a Scandavian couple who winter here every year, and is therefore incredibly well equipped with every possible amenity. With only one close neighbour (with a high wall), Villa Elsa affords an excellent degree of privacy to its guests, and yet is still within walking distance of the excellent local tavernas, shops and beaches. It is very rare to find a pool on Crete that has any form of heating, which is a huge plus at the start and end of the season when the pools can be a little chilly. Guests at Villa Elsa are very fortunate to find that the larger than average swimming pool is heated to a minimum of 26 degrees and is therefore suited for swimming later and earlier in the season.

An eclectic mix of modern décor and furnishings combine to make an attractive and pleasingly comfortable interior. The open plan living room is particularly spacious with wonderful bay views through the extra large windows and glass doors, which lead out onto the many furnished terraces. Members of larger families or groups who would like a little more privacy can stay in the completely self-contained apartment on the ground floor. The apartment has a separate entrance but is only ever rented as one unit with the villa, not separately.

The villa has a number of outdoor terraces which all enjoy the stunning views. Set on different levels, there are many seating areas with a choice of either sun or shade. Beautifully landscaped flowerbeds and rockeries have been colourfully planted with bougainvillea, jasmine, hibiscus, geraniums, daisies, cacti and different varieties of palm trees. The dining terrace and barbeque area are well furnished and shaded by a pergola made of local cypress wood and terracotta roof tiles. The land naturally drops off at the front of the pool terrace which faces west, and therefore has perfectly unspoilt views of the sea, the mountains, and the glorious sunsets that announce the warm summer nights that Crete is famous for.


Villa Accommodation

Main Floor (2 steps up from the driveway, 2 steps from the pool terrace): Open plan living room, kitchen and dining area, 1 shower room, 3 double bedrooms. The covered front porch has a couch, armchairs and coffee tables and is completely shaded. A front door leads from the front porch into the very large L-shaped living room/kitchen area. The living room as separate seating areas and a computer desk. There are 2 large mink brown leather couches, a creamy beige linen sofa, 3 zebra print armchairs and a matching footstool, 2 coffee tables, a gilt full length wall mirror, a side board with wicker drawers, a cream glass cabinet, a cream entertainment unit with flat screen TV, Satellite TV receiver, DVD player and a stereo including a CD player, a computer desk and chair, a footstool, a grandfather clock, a wall mirror, ornaments and pink silk curtains. A wall of windows looks out north over Plaka village to Souda Bay, and an extra wide set of double doors opens out onto the outside pool and dining terrace, part of which is shaded by a cypress wood pergola. Around the corner from one end of the living room is the spacious fully fitted kitchen and inside dining area. The kitchen has built-in white cabinets, a built-in inox oven and ceramic hob, an large inox American style fridge/freezer including icemaker, a coffee maker, a kettle, a toaster, and a large kitchen inventory. There is also a white wood/wicker dining table and 6 matching chairs with blue and white cushions, a half moon shaped window that looks out onto the front garden and parking area, and a door that opens onto the front porch. From the kitchen and living room there is a corridor that has a white wood and glass display cabinet, a door to the shower room and the doors to the 2 double bedrooms. The master bedroom has a cream carved wood 4 poster bed, 2 matching bedside tables with reading lamps, built-in wardrobes, a gilt wall mirror, curtains, and double doors that open out onto the pool terrace. The main shower room is spacious and has cream tiles, a shower unit with a glass door, a black and gold vanity unit with a sink and matching wall mirrors, wall lamps, a shaving mirror, a hanging rack, a black and gold cabinet, glass shelves, weighing scales, a washing machine, a tumble dryer, and a frosted window with blue diaphanous curtains. The second double bedroom has a double bed, a long over the bed shelf, 2 bedside tables with reading lamps, built-in white wardrobes, curtains, and double doors that open out onto the front driveway and front garden.


Ground floor optional apartment (Level with the lower driveway, 16 steps from the pool terrace and main floor of villa): 1 bedroom or living room with a double fold out sofa bed, bunkbeds, kitchenette, shower room, and 1 double bedroom. The apartment is located in the ground floor of the main villa and both bedrooms have a completely separate entrance, therefore the occupant of either room are not disturbed by the other guests going in or out. One door from the covered side terrace that has sea views opens into the bedroom or living room that is furnished with a double fold out ssofa bed, a set of bunk beds with 2 single mattresses and a white metal frame (these are better suited to children than adults), 2 armchairs, a book shelf with a small TV and ornaments, a coffee table, a storage chest, a lamp, curtains, and small windows and the door with views to the sea. A doorway leads to the kitchenette which has a sink, built-in white cabinets, a cooker, a fridge freezer, a microwave, a coffee maker, and a kettle. A door leads from the kitchenette to a shower room which has a shower glass shower unit, a sink, a white cabinet with mirror and lamps, a white chest of drawers, and a toilet. A door from the kitchenette also leads to the double bedroom which is equipped with a double bed, bedside cabinets with lamps, built-in wardrobes, curtains, and windows and a separate door that lead out onto the covered sea facing side terrace that is equipped with a coffee table and chairs. The 2 downstairs bedroom each have their own door out onto the terrace.


Villa Location


The main square in Plaka is only 400m from Villa Elsa and is still very much the focal point of village life. There are lovely shady mulberry trees under which the locals sit to watch the world go by whilst enjoying a delicious meal or even just an ice cold frappe. Plaka was one of the original village sets for the film “Zorba the Greek” and it still has quaint whitewashed houses and narrow streets leading off from the square. The modern outskirts of the village have expanded recently as have the facilities, which now include  7 tavernas, 1 Italian restaurant, 6 cafes, 2 well stocked mini markets, 1 shop with local products and gifts, 1 hardware shop, and  1 real estate agency. The lovely village of Almyrida is only1km from Villa Elsa, and is built around a pretty crescent shaped sandy beach, with a small fishing harbour at the eastern end. The beach is very shallow and safe, which is good news if you have children or are not a strong swimmer. Lining the beach are 12 tavernas 1 pizzeria/pasta restaurant, 6 cafes, 2 bars,  6 gift shops, 3 mini markets, 1 jewellery shop, 1 ladies clothes shop, 1 butcher, 1 fruit and vegetable shop with a deli counter, 1 Italian ice cream shop, 3 bakeries/coffee shops, 1 off license, 1 pharmacy, 4 real estate offices, 1 nail spa, a body/wellness spa, a hair dresser, and 1 kiosk.   Also in Almyrida there is Villas Crete Holidays for tourist information, private boat hire, horse riding, big game fishing, boat trips, private sightseeing flights, water skiing, and guided coach or walking trips, a games area with pool tables and a variety of games machines, a young children’s play centre/crèche with babysitting, a scuba diving office, pedalo and paddle board rentals, and a water sports centre that rents out windsurfers, catamarans, kayaks, and bicycles. A few minutes by car from the villa, there are a huge variety of archaeological sites and traditional villages with wonderful tavernas. There is also an interesting selection of small craft centres and museums, including glass blowing in Kokkino Horio and lace makers in Gavalohori. For those of you looking for even more activity, the historic town of Chania is only 35 minutes away by car.
